What to Wear to a Winery

Known for tantalizing wine, rolling hills, and good vibes, wine tasting is Northern California’s most iconic tourist activity. Whether you’re visiting Napa, Sonoma, or even Petaluma, you’re bound to discover a new favorite bottle while enjoying sunny skies and beautiful weather.

Of course, a trip to wine country requires the perfect outfit! We’ve put together this comprehensive guide to help you learn what to wear to a winery.

1. Dress up, not down.

When going wine tasting, it’s expected that you’ll dress up a bit. You don’t have to show up to a winery wearing black tie clothing by any means- a casual sundress, a skirt, or a cute pair of pants is perfect! At the very least, avoid wearing activewear, distressed jeans, or anything too baggy.

2. Be bold!

Wine tasting is a great opportunity to be brave and try out new looks. I like to wear bright colors, bold prints, or unique, trendy styles.

3. Bring a hair tie.

Both Napa and Sonoma are pretty breezy. Even on calm days, the weather can go from peaceful to windy in no time at all!

No matter the location of the vineyard, it’s not fun to focus on wine tasting when hair is constantly getting in your mouth. If you plan on wearing your hair down, bring a hair tie just in case!

4. Wear comfortable shoes.

While it’s a safe choice to dress up to go wine tasting, try to accessorize with a comfortable pair of shoes.

Many wineries are paved with cobblestones, which can be challenging to walk on. In addition to tastings, many wineries also offer vineyard tours and hikes around their premises. You don’t want to be trudging through grass and dirt in a pair of 5-inch heels!

When I head to a vineyard, I typically wear a pair of dressy flat sandals or comfortable low heels. During the fall or winter, I opt for a chic pair of boots.

5. Mind your lipstick.

The entire wine tasting experience is centered around- you’ve guessed it- drinking wine! You may also drink a lot of water to stay hydrated and cleanse your palette in between different types of wine.

It can be stressful to worry about re-applying lipstick. Make sure to wear a lip color that won’t transfer onto your wineglass. I like to stick to transfer-proof liquid lipsticks. For an even more hassle-free look, you can skip lipstick altogether!

6. Leave the heavy fragrance at home.

Scent is a crucial component to wine-tasting. Not only can strong smells interfere with the aromas of different wines they can also interfere with your sense of taste!

Wearing perfume to a wine-tasting is considered a major faux pas. Do yourself and your fellow wine-tasters a favor and skip wearing perfume, cologne, or any heavily scented hairsprays or lotion.

Spring/Summer Wine Tasting Outfits

It’s easy to choose a wine tasting outfit during spring. Just choose a cute floral dress and you’re good to go! Another great option is to pair a chic blouse with a fun midi skirt. You can even layer a lightweight jacket on chillier days.

Summer can get quite hot in Wine Country. While you can still wear a maxi dress, I almost always wear a mini dress to make sure I don’t overheat!

Fall/Winter Wine Tasting Outfits

When going wine tasting during the fall and winter, I like to stick to darker colors. Instead of mini dresses or lightweight fabrics, I gravitate towards floral maxi dresses or jeans paired with a cute blouse.

While spring and summer in Napa can easily reach the 90’s, fall and winter are considerably cooler. A sweater or light jacket is a must to stay comfortable during your vineyard visit.
