9 Summer Makeup Tips

While one of the most magical and adventure-filled seasons, summer can present a challenge to makeup lovers. Summer makeup can fall prey to sweat, humidity, and more.

After growing up in Arizona where temperatures often top 110 degrees, I’m a pro at keeping my makeup looking and feeling fresh in the heat. Here are my top makeup tips for summer, as well as a few of my favorite summer beauty products!

1. Keep your skin moisturized.

Hot summer weather can easily dry out your skin.

Foundation applied to dry skin can look patchy and uneven. To minimize this, make sure to apply moisturizer during the dry summer months.

2. Swap your foundation for a tinted moisturizer.

Another way to prevent dry skin is to substitute a tinted moisturizer, BB, or CC cream in lieu of foundation. In addition to keeping your skin hydrated, tinted moisturizer will give your skin a light, dewy glow.

3. Exfoliate your skin.

To remove dry skin altogether, use an exfoliating mask or cleansing facial scrub.

Another benefit to exfoliating your skin is that it makes it easier to apply foundation.

4. Apply primer.

If you want to extend the longevity of your foundation even further, use a primer. Primer ensures a smooth and even application of foundation or tinted moisturizer. It also prevents foundation from sliding off your face when exposed to sweat or excess humidity.

5. Wear sunscreen.

Don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun! If you’re planning on spending an extended amount of time outdoors, throw on a layer of sunscreen to prevent sun damage and premature aging.

6. Stick to matte lipstick.

Matte lipstick is the perfect summer lip product. While creamy lipsticks or lip gloss can slide off easily in the humidity, matte lip colors are more likely to stay put.

7. Ditch the eyeliner.

To prevent your eyeliner from sliding in the heat and humidity, set it using eyeshadow.

Choose a dark color that matches the color of your eyeliner. Using an angled eyeshadow brush, gently layer the eyeshadow on top of your eyeliner. The eyeshadow will absorb sweat and moisture and prevent it from moving around throughout the day.

If you want a similar look that will endure the heat even better, skip the eyeliner altogether and line your upper lid with only dark eyeshadow.

8. Setting powder.

If hot temperatures are making you sweat throughout the day, apply a thin layer of setting powder to absorb excess moisture.

You can also use setting powder to touch up your makeup throughout the day. If I’m visiting a humid climate, I like to keep a travel-size setting powder in my handbag for a quick refresh.

9. UD Setting Spray

Of course, any summer makeup look wouldn’t be complete without setting spray.

Setting spray will keep your makeup from melting in any weather. My go-to product is the Urban Decay All Nighter Long-Lasting Setting Spray, but I’ve linked a few other highly rated picks below!
