5 Things to Consider Before Cutting Your Hair Short

Are you thinking about cutting your hair short? A short haircut is a great way to refresh your look and boost your confidence!

After years of growing my hair out, I impulsively decided to chop my hair into a shoulder-length bob. However, there were a few things that I didn’t consider before making such a drastic change.

Here are my top 5 things to consider before cutting your hair short.

1. It can improve your hair health.

While cutting your hair short won’t make your remaining hair healthy, it can remove already damaged parts and prevent that damage from spreading.

Before I cut my hair short, I had a large section in the back that was mangled after an incident with a scrunchie. After almost two years of babying it, my hair started to grow back, but it still wouldn’t stop tangling in that one spot. Chopping my hair off removed that badly damaged section of hair and allowed it to regrow healthy and tangle-free.

In addition to getting rid of unhealthy hair, chopping your locks will remove split ends. This prevents split ends from traveling up your hair shaft.

2. It can appear to change your hair’s texture.

Long hair weighs more than short hair, giving your hair the appearance of less volume. While cutting your hair short won’t actually change your hair’s texture, the reduction in weight can make your hair look more full.

When I cut my hair short, I was surprised to find that it looked more wavy than I was used to. Without the extra length, the waves I’d always had were a lot more obvious.

3. It requires more maintenance.

Short cuts require more trips to the salon to maintain. If you don’t have room in your schedule or budget for frequent hair appointments, a longer cut might be better for you.

4. It’s harder to style.

One of the biggest surprises I discovered after cutting my hair was that short hair is harder to style.

When I had long hair, I typically washed my hair in the morning, let it air dry, and then threw on hair extensions before leaving the house. Occasionally on humid days, I’d touch up a couple of particularly wavy sections with a hair straightener.

Unfortunately, my new short hair is not as easy to manage. Since my hair now has more texture, I have to blow-dry it after washing to minimize frizz. My natural short hair has uneven waves, so I need to either straighten or curl it before going out. Instead of my old low-maintenance routine, I now have to spend 20-30 minutes styling my hair!

If you don’t want to spend extra time styling your hair, a short cut may not be a good fit for your lifestyle.

5. Hair grows.

If you decide to cut your hair and don’t like it, don’t worry!

Personally, while I love the look of my new short haircut, it’s not the best fit for my lifestyle. I simply don’t have the time to style or maintain it.

However, at the end of the day, your hair will grow back. Don’t be afraid to make bold choices- hair is only temporary!
